It was most challenging to cut portal mainly due to heritage building on surface which are 100 years old. The drill and blast or use of rock breaker would have caused damage to the foundation of these buildings. Other challenge was offered by strata to be cut. It was hard basalt of 110 Mpa.
Thanks to the design and cutting efficiency of Rockwheel model G40, used on Kobelko excavator SK 380 by LNT. Portal of 11 meter diameter with length of 110 meters was completed in less than a year.
